Fishtube Prize Winners Part 1
I’ve never really been lucky… Except for a few line wins at Galaxy bingo and the Tweak shirt I caught at my first “rock concert” (if you can even call it that), my competition entry forms and lotto tickets seem to be chronically allergic to winning.
I've always wanted to experience the call… you know the one where you answer and on the other end an over enthusiastic voice goes, congratulations sir you have won…! Recently I finally got to experience that call, ironically I was the person on the other end, the one doing the congratulations and announcing the good news. For me making the call was just as exciting as receiving It would be.
For the last 6 months Fishtube.tv has been running a competition where 2 lucky anglers who have submitted their catches through the fishtube app to the fishtube website would be off to Ichingo Chobe River Lodge on the banks of the Chobe River on Impalila Island Namibia. The prize included a 4 night stay at the lodge with breakfast lunch and dinner as well as guided fishing on the Chobe river and Kasai channel. To top it all off S.A Airlink threw in a pair of return tickets from O.R Thambo to Kasane airport making it the highest valued single prize Fishtube has given away to date.
On the 28th of June JP Henin and Werner Nell touched down at Kasane airport in Botswana. JP an accomplished fly tier and keen angler would be fishing with myself, representing team fly and Werner a provincial art lure angler would be fishing with the legendary Craig Thomassen from the Inside Angling series for team lure… In Botswana we had to cross the Chobe river to Impalila island on the Namibian side where we would be staying. The whole process was quick and painless not taking more than 45 minutes which gave us some time to squeeze in an afternoon session of fishing. This makes Ichingo lodge one of the most accessible lodges for Tigerfishing and I can see why so many anglers return annually to fish the Chobe River.
The legendary Chobe rapids that sit just below the Kasai channel mouth have delivered some monster tigerfish in the past and has become quite a popular spot for fly and lure anglers. The Chobe rapids also happen to be right on the doorstep of Ichingo lodge and within minutes JP and myself had our first encounter with the mighty African Tigerfish the area is renowned for and between the two of us, had a few tiglets buzz our flies and some larger fish shake us off. Just before the sun disappeared I succeeded in landing a beautiful fish of ten pounds and team fly was on the board.
Team fly’s confidence was soaring when we got back to the dinner table, I mean we managed to land a tenner in the first 2 hours of fishing and we were 1-0 up in the friendly competition with team lure, this was going to be easy… The confidence was short lived though as the pressure soon shifted. Like my old fishing buddy used to say “you never want to catch a big fish on the first cast"
See who scrapes the win between team lure and fly in part 2 of my blog.
